In Lisbon it was a plate of seafood, in Munich a beer hall. In Vienna it’s – almost nothing.
We read the 189 top-ranked posts about eating in Vienna on Rednote, the app Chinese travellers use for their tips, and counted how many of the city’s 1,754 food businesses appear in them. Fourteen do, as of 26 September 2026 — the lowest figure of all nine cities we checked. These five are named more than once.
1. Schnitzel One
Three mentions, and the most-read post is simply called “Vienna | Schnitzel One.” No superlative, no year count, no Michelin – just the name. In Vienna that’s enough to reach the top, and that says more about the competitive situation than about the restaurant.
Neuer Markt 8a
2. Plachutta
Three mentions, rank 19 – the best placement on the list. The hook is historical: “The royal Tafelspitz, as eaten by Sisi.” Empress Elisabeth is well known in China through film and television, and Plachutta is the only Viennese house actually using that connection on Rednote.
Wollzeile 38
3. Figlmüller
Two mentions, 318 likes – the greatest reach on the list, and it comes from a collected list: ”🇦🇹 Vienna 🍽️ food guide – this one post is all you need 😋.” Figlmüller itself sits at rank 47 in the search results, at the bottom edge of the second page.
The reach belongs to the post, not to the restaurant. If you don’t appear yourself, you depend on somebody else taking you along.
Wollzeile 5
4. Meissl & Schadn
Two mentions, and the freshest post in the survey – from 6 September 2026, three weeks old: ”🇦🇹 Landed in Vienna, straight to the hundred-year-old schnitzel house.” From the airport to the table, no detour. That’s the kind of travel Rednote is made for.
Schubertring 10–12
5. Beef & Glory
Two mentions, and the only house on the list sold on something other than Austrian cuisine: “Number one in Vienna on the World 101 list.” A place on an international ranking translates on Rednote. A taste doesn’t.
Florianigasse 35
What stands out
189 posts, but barely any names. In Madrid, 212 posts yielded 39 businesses; in Vienna, 189 posts yielded 14. So people do write about Vienna – they just rarely name a restaurant. The posts describe the city, the coffee house as an idea, the Sachertorte as a motif. Where exactly to go is mentioned less often.
Four of five are schnitzel or Tafelspitz. The list is essentially a list of two dishes. The coffee house Vienna is internationally known for doesn’t appear among the most-named businesses – even though we searched for it explicitly.
The rankings are poor. The best placement on this list is 19. In Madrid the leader sat at rank 2, in Barcelona at rank 3. The few Viennese restaurants that do appear sit far down – where hardly anyone still reads.
This is an open city. Read differently: in Vienna practically nothing is taken. Starting there doesn’t mean competing with an established name like Ramiro in Lisbon or the Hofbräuhaus in Munich, but with an empty space.
How we measured this
On 26 September 2026 we analysed five searches Chinese-speaking travellers make before going out to eat: Vienna guide, Vienna must-eats, Vienna food, Vienna restaurant recommendations, Viennese coffee house. For each search, the fifty top-ranked posts, 189 distinct ones in total. In those we searched for the names of all 1,754 food businesses OpenStreetMap lists for Vienna.
What we counted is how often a business is named – that is search visibility, not popularity. A restaurant can be full of Chinese guests and missing here because nobody writes about it. A mention can also be a warning. Rednote’s ranking is personalised: these numbers are one day’s measurement. Vienna’s business list is the smallest in the comparison at 1,754 entries – part of the gap to Madrid or Rome comes from that.
The same survey for Munich, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome and Lisbon.
