7 Madrid restaurants Chinese travellers write about

39 of Madrid's 8,522 food businesses appear in the Rednote posts Chinese travellers read before going out to eat. We analysed 212 of those posts, as of 26 September 2026.

Chinese guests book the table before they fly. Not via Google, but via Rednote – the app where 300 million people get their travel tips. We read the 212 top-ranked posts about eating in Madrid and counted how many of the city’s 8,522 food businesses appear in them at all.

Thirty-nine do, as of 26 September 2026. These seven are named more than once.

The order below is not a ranking – how often each place appears is stated with it.

1. Vinitus

Nine posts, rank 2 in the search results – and not an institution, but a chain. The most-read post translates as: “If you come to Spain and don’t eat at Vinitus, you’ll really regret it!!” That’s the register recommendations take on Rednote – not a review, but a call between friends.

The same chain also tops our Barcelona list. For Chinese travellers, Vinitus is apparently the safe bet in Spain.

Gran Vía 4

2. O Grelo

Three mentions, Galician, and the post behind it is one of those collected lists that do particularly well on Rednote: “Madrid 🇪🇸 | I’m picky – here’s everything good I ate.” 358 likes. Anyone on a list like that benefits from every other name on it.

Calle de Menorca 39

3. Restaurante La Montería

Two mentions, but rank 6 – better placed than almost anything else here. The post sells it on age: “Madrid’s ten-year Michelin institution.” Awards and year counts are hard currency on Rednote; they fit into a caption.

Calle Lope de Rueda 35

4. Botín

The world’s oldest restaurant according to Guinness – and that’s exactly what the title says: ”🇪🇸 Madrid must-eat: 300-year-old Guinness record holder.” Two mentions, 190 likes. For a house with that global reputation, remarkably little.

Calle de Cuchilleros 17

5. La Vaca Argentina

Two mentions, 441 likes – the best reach in the second tier. The post: ”🇪🇸 Madrid’s steakhouse with the best atmosphere and good food.” Atmosphere first, food second. On a platform that shows pictures before words, that isn’t carelessness – it’s the right order.

Calle de Mateo Inurria 19

6. La Oreja de Jaime

Sits at rank 35 in the search results, far down – and still collected 264 likes, more than Tapa Tapa at rank 4 with 39. The post: ”🇪🇸 Madrid – the best local tapas bar at Puerta del Sol.” A good post travels further than a good ranking.

Calle de la Cruz 15

7. Tapa Tapa

Three mentions, rank 4, small numbers – but the title is a lesson in itself: “The garlic prawns of my life at TAPA TAPA in Madrid.” The restaurant isn’t the news; one dish is. That’s exactly how people search on Rednote.

What stands out

Madrid is read through tapas. Four of the seven are tapas places. Cooking something else in Madrid doesn’t mean competing with them – it means being absent from a category nobody has claimed on Rednote yet.

The long tail is very long. After number seven come 32 businesses with exactly one mention each. Unlike Munich, where one house draws everything to itself, Madrid spreads wide – just so thinly that none of them are really found.

39 out of 8,522. Less than half a percent of Madrid’s restaurant scene appears in what Chinese travellers read before their trip.

How we measured this

On 26 September 2026 we analysed five searches Chinese-speaking travellers make before going out to eat: Madrid guide, Madrid must-eats, Madrid food, Madrid restaurant recommendations, Madrid tapas. For each search, the fifty top-ranked posts, 212 distinct ones in total. In those we searched for the names of all 8,522 food businesses OpenStreetMap lists for Madrid.

What we counted is how often a business is named – that is search visibility, not popularity. A restaurant can be full of Chinese guests and missing here because nobody writes about it. A mention can also be a warning. Rednote’s ranking is personalised: these numbers are one day’s measurement. Generic words and place names were excluded – a restaurant called “Puerta del Sol” would otherwise match every post about the square.

The same survey for Barcelona, Lisbon, Rome, Vienna and Munich.
