Before Chinese guests arrive in Munich, they usually already know where they’re going to eat. Not from a guidebook, but from Rednote – the app where 300 million people go for their tips. We read the 213 top-ranked posts about eating in Munich and counted how many of the city’s 4,125 food businesses appear in them at all.
Thirty-two do, as of 26 September 2026. These six are named more than once.
1. Hofbräuhaus
The clearest result of the survey. Thirteen posts – more than the next five combined. The most-read one translates as “Munich’s 400-year-old royal beer hall, a must-visit.” On Rednote, the Hofbräuhaus isn’t a restaurant in Munich, it is Munich. Anyone who arrives has already seen it before walking in.
Both landmark and cliché – and the only house in the city that is genuinely found on Rednote.
Platzl 9, 80331 Munich
2. Augustiner Klosterwirt
Named three times, but once at rank 1 in the search results – better placed than the Hofbräuhaus. The post is called “Restaurants that locals in Munich recommend,” and that framing is the point: not a sight, but a tip. Posts like that get saved, not just liked.
Augustinerstraße 1, 80331 Munich
3. Giorgia Trattoria
The surprise on the list. An Italian place in Haidhausen that makes it into the most-named group – via a post titled “Munich’s Little Italy.” Chinese travellers in Europe aren’t only looking for the locally typical; they’re looking for what photographs well and makes a story.
Weißenburger Straße 2, 81667 Munich
4. Augustiner-Keller
Two mentions, but 600 likes – almost all from a single post: “Bavaria’s best pork knuckle and beer.” The beer garden sits at rank 48 in the search results, right at the bottom. On Rednote, reach and ranking are two different things.
Arnulfstraße 52, 80335 Munich
5. Japan Haus
Named twice, and the most-read post is simply titled “There’s so much good food in Munich” – one of those collected lists that get saved particularly often on Rednote. Eating Japanese in Germany isn’t a contradiction for Chinese guests; it’s a familiar anchor.
Stuntzstraße 32, 81677 Munich
6. Bia & Ban
The latest entry on the list, in both senses: “Late-night grill in Munich.” Two mentions, small numbers – but it’s the only place here that stands for a time of day rather than a cuisine.
Augustenstraße 16, 80333 Munich
What stands out
The city has exactly one face on Rednote. Four of the six are Bavarian beer houses, and the Hofbräuhaus alone draws a quarter of all mentions. Munich appears there as a beer hall with pork knuckle – not wrong, but very little for a city with four thousand places to eat.
After number six it gets lonely. Twenty-six further businesses appear exactly once. On a platform where posts keep being found for years, being named once means, in practice: not being named.
Whoever isn’t there doesn’t exist for these guests. That’s the uncomfortable part. A restaurant can be full every night and still not appear on Rednote – and then it won’t be found by the people who are yet to come.
How we measured this
On 26 September 2026 we analysed five searches Chinese-speaking travellers make before going out to eat: Munich guide, Munich must-eats, Munich food, Munich restaurant recommendations, Munich beer hall. For each search, the fifty top-ranked posts, 213 distinct ones in total. In those we searched for the names of all 4,125 food businesses OpenStreetMap lists for Munich.
What we counted is how often a business is named – that is search visibility, not popularity. A restaurant can be full of Chinese guests and missing here because nobody writes about it. A mention can also be a warning. And Rednote’s ranking is personalised: these numbers are one day’s measurement.
The same survey for Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona, Rome and Vienna.
